6 Steps To Seeing Longer Natural Hair

Let me first start off by admitting something to you. When I first started my natural hair journey,  I was so excited to see other naturalistas out there with long natural hair and I just couldn’t wait to get to that point. I was constantly checking my hair length hoping to see some serious growth. When my hair wasn’t growing as fast as many of the natural hair women I watched on Youtube ,I was getting down on myself and thought that it wasn’t in the cards for my hair to grow. RoyalTeeZone Natural Hair

It wasn’t until I decided to stop focusing on the length aspect of my hair and started focusing on the beauty of my own hair and getting to know my hair type and texture. What products my hair likes and what I need to do to maintain the health of my hair, which in turn would lead to growth.

I also started doing more protective styles. One my go to protective style methods is wearing wigs.  I protect my edges by keeping them moisturized while wearing wigs. There are so many types and styles to choose from. Oh,  and let me tell you, on days I don’t have time, having one of my sexy wigs at my disposal, is a life saver. Why? My hair type which is 4b/4c is very delicate and I need to be gentle and caring with my hair  to avoid excessive breakage, split ends, and damage. So on days I’m in a rush…..you get the point.

Speaking of NOT TO DO! You know there should be the number one “DO NOT DO” in the natural hair journey hair book. That number one rule is Don’t Compare Your Hair To Other Naturals. Every person is different and so is the natural hair journey for each individual.  It’s certainly ok to get ideas, tips and tricks from others in natural hair community. We all do it. That’s what makes our community wonderful and has helped so many naturals achieve the health and manageability they desire.

Just know that at the end of the day what might work for other natural haired girls with your textured hair, doesn’t mean that it’s going to work for you.

So here are Six Steps For You To See Longer Natural Hair:

1. Stop focusing on length and focus on health. Do a length check every 3 to 4 months if you’re really going to focus on the length of your hair.

2. Know and understand your hair type.

  • What products works best in your hair
  • Sticking with what works for you, instead of being a product junkie.

3. Depending on your hair type it might be best to wear protective styles instead of constantly wearing your hair out. The natural elements like the sun or the humidity can cause your hair to break or split and become extremely dry.

4. Moisturize, Moisturize, Moisturize. Can’t emphasize this enough. ( A spray bottle with water works wonders)

5. Massage your scalp. This helps to get the blood flow and scalp circulation going which in turn can help in aiding in hair growth.

6. Depending on your texture and thickness of your hair, make sure your doing a deep conditioner either every other week or once a month.  If your an active person that enjoys outdoor activities and working out like me….doing a deep conditioner every other week is very helpful.

Finally realize that our hair takes a long time to grow. There are MANY naturals that cannot retain 100% of their growth. . There are a small proportion of women who can keep all their growth but I feel that it is more reasonable to expect between 3-5 inches per year with a regular trimming or dusting routine. If your hair is susceptible to split ends, then cutting them off will impact retention but provided at the end of 6 months to a year you’ve  kept some length, do not be disheartened.
